General

General Description

Enfield is the 5th largest London borough by population. The estimated increase in the population from 2001 to 2007 was 2.8%. The latest projections show little growth in the next few years – the longer term picture is uncertain and will be affected by London wide policies and economic conditions. Enfield is a very diverse Borough, socially, economically and ethnically. It is estimated that over the half the population is of minority ethnic origin (non White British) and Enfield is believed to have the largest Cypriot community in the country.

Ethnicity

The Council has produced an ‘Ethnicity Baseline’ to estimate the size and age structure of 22 ethnic groups, to attempt to better represent the contemporary picture than portrayed by other statistics such as the 2001 Census.

Using all non White British as meaning Black & Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, their proportion in Enfield, according to the above estimates, was 52.5% at mid-2007.

There is no one accepted way of measuring disability. A commonly quoted statistic relates to those who recorded themselves as having ‘limiting long term illness’ in the 2001 Census – this was 16.1% of the population.
